Jakarta, October 13, 2023 – PT Pasifik Satelit Nusantara (PSN), the first private satellite company in Indonesia, signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) in Jakarta, on Friday (13/10). Through this agreement, it is hoped that it will further strengthen the ecosystem of satellite technology and remote sensing based on research results in Indonesia.
The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding was carried out by PSN President Director Adi Rahman Adiwoso and Deputy for Research & Innovation Utilization of BRIN R. Hendrian. The signing was also witnessed by PSN Finance Director Ravi Talwar and Director of Research and Innovation Utilization in BRIN Industry Mulyadi Sinung Harjono.
Adi Rahman explained that Indonesia has the potential and competence to utilize satellite technology and remote sensing for various needs. This is shown by Indonesia’s status as the owner of the most satellites in Southeast Asia. Through this signing, it is hoped that Indonesia’s capabilities in the space sector will be further enhanced as well as a catalyst for satellite technology in Southeast Asia.
“We thank BRIN for this collaboration. With PSN’s experience of more than 32 years in the satellite industry and combined with BRIN’s expertise in research, Indonesia is expected to have the capability, not only to buy and use, but also to build its own satellites,” said Adi Rahman.
This collaboration is also expected to produce a study to be a basis for the government in making space policies. Adi said that satellite technology has experienced rapid development. This is proven by the ease and affordable cost of building a satellite. In addition, the use of space will be carried out on a large scale in 2030.
“Welcoming 100 years of Indonesia, as an industrial player we want there to be a policy on space. In the future, the way space is utilized will be very different and it is not impossible that Indonesia can build a sensing satellite,” said Adi.
Hendrian added that BRIN welcomed the collaboration with PSN. BRIN has the view that industrial players are one of the strategic partners. With the important position of industrial players, BRIN has formed the Directorate of Research and Innovation Utilization in Industry. This directorate can collaborate in various fields, from satellites to horticulture.
“We are grateful for this strategic collaboration. Industry players are the most important partners for BRIN. Hopefully, under the umbrella of this cooperation, we will also discuss Indonesia’s policies and positions in the space sector,” said Hendrian.
Through this cooperation, PSN and BRIN will collaborate in joint research, development and assessment, as well as utilization of results in the field of satellite technology and remote sensing. PSN and BRIN can also utilize the competence of Human Resources (HR) and facilities and infrastructure owned by both parties in accordance with the provisions agreed upon together.
